There are five main classes of IP Class A-Class E. the class A is for very large networks. The first number of the IP ranges from 1 to 128 digits. The networks associated with class A of the IP account for the half of the total available IP's. Class B is used for medium size networks. The first octet ranges from 128 to 191. There is also a second octet in class B which is used as net identifier. Both the octets together operate for the internet connections. Class C is used in small to midsized business. The IP address of the first octet ranges from 192 to 223. The second and third octet is included in the class C. the third octet of the IP is used to identify the host.

Class D is used for the multicasts. The Class D is a bit different from the first three classes. It includes four octets. The first, second, third bit value is 1, where as the fourth bit is 0.there is a total of 28 bits used for the identification of the system. The Class E is till now just used for the experimental purposes. As class D the Class E is also varied from the first three classes. The bit values of first, second, third and fourth bit is 1.
